Sustainable IT

Sustainability. Taste the word a little. You've probably heard it a lot in recent years. It's not cool if it's not green, the youth says. Or, we think they say so. And we really agree. If we are to pass the earth on to our children, adjustments must be made. Therefore, we can not get tired of the word sustainability yet.

A few weeks ago, Statistics Norway came out with its Norway climate accounting. It was really cheap reading. That is why it is more important than ever that we all take sustainability seriously. Because what not everyone knows is that your IT everyday life can affect the environment. You can actually get quite green where you sit in the office, in the countryside or in the home office. Let's look at how:

Step 1: Equipment

We'll take the big, bad wolf first. Who is it? Yes, it's your PC. Or general physical equipment that requires a lot of the earth's resources. Many may have been waiting for the latest in smartphones, game consoles, tablets or PCs. While the message in the shop is the same regardless of the supplier: "They lack a metal or raw material which means they cannot produce enough". Why? Yes, because too much of our raw materials and metals are used AND we are too poor at recycling what we have already made.

So how can you recycle your equipment? We have the answer to that: collaboration with people who can!

We collaborate with 3stepIT which takes reuse and recycling of computer equipment to the next level. Thanks to them, we can offer efficient, economical and sustainable handling of IT equipment where we contribute to a circular use and reuse model. We have collaborated with 3stepIT for immediately 10 years. With the same value base, we have helped to extend the life cycle of IT products, contributed to environmentally friendly reuse, reduction and recycling of electronic waste. You can do that too!

What exactly is sustainability?

The UN's sustainability goals set the guidelines for how we work with sustainability Braathe. We want to contribute to achieving the UN's sustainability goals and focus in particular on four areas:
  • Goal 5: Gender equality
  • Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth
  • Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production
  • Goal 13: Stop climate change

Step 2: Data storage

Data generates heat. Lots of heat. You may have noticed this when the PC is breathing and panting at your knee while you work with 100 tabs up and are about to start one program. We can promise you that it will also be hot in the data centers around. The centers where all information is stored securely. Either with others or all alone. So what can you do to prevent it from breathing and panting? Yes, you can start with free cooling. Like us!

On Braathe-the farm (yes, we live on a farm) we have dug down around 15000 meters of pipes. Ground cooling, which is the technical terminology, means that we can obtain around 400 kW of cooling or heating power when necessary. So, our data (and yours, if it is with us) is cooled down in a sustainable way, all year round. What solutions do you have for data storage? We hope they are good.

Step 3: Internet

The Internet solves a lot, we know that. But in the Covid era, the internet suddenly had the opportunity to show even more positive sides. Namely, that precisely internet access could give you the opportunity to drop both plane, boat, train and car. So yes, good internet leads to more sustainable and environmentally friendly choices. You thus reduce your footprint by consciously using the internet more in a work context.

We have included in our strategy that we will be hybrid in our meeting business and also run more meetings online, to reduce the need for travel business where possible. Maybe you have something to gain in this context as well?

Did you know that there are several things that make Network as a Service more sustainable? We have collected them in our E-book on the topic.
