"Everything we talked about last time also applies to the 845," says Anders Bo Forsdahl, production manager at HP Norway. "Size, security, interaction and sustainability - everything is there. You can't tell the difference from the outside of the machine; the chassis is exactly the same, and the smart solutions are the same. It is in the core that the difference lies.”
The secret is revealed by the code in the product name. The first number indicates how powerful and advanced the model is – 4, 6, 8 or 10 – while the second number tells about the size of the screen. 3 means 13-inch, 4 is 14-inch, while 6 is 16-inch. And the third number? It indicates processor brand. 0 is Intel, while 5 is AMD.
"AMD has done a fantastic job with the Ryzen series," enthuses Forsdahl. "In the past, Intel had total dominance, and was the first choice among all serious PC buyers - but now AMD has gotten into position and created a processor series that is not only as fast as the competition, but also does it with less power."
I a study conducted by Principled Technologies on behalf of HP and AMD, as of November 2023, we find a comparison of the HP EliteBook 845 G10 with AMD Ryzen™ 7 PRO 7840HS processor, and a Dell™ Latitude™ 7440 laptop powered by an Intel® Core™ i7-1370P vPro. The results of the study are sensational: 51,6% better performance in PassMark PerformanceTest 11, 25,9% better score on the Procyon Video Editing Benchmark, and up to 3 extra hours of battery life based on the MobileMark 25 tests.
"Perhaps we should compare our own models here," says Forsdahl, "but the point is that the AMD version is not only slightly cheaper, it also performs more, and does it with less."
On paper, the Intel Core i7-1370P may look more powerful, with its 14 cores and 20 threads, and maximum clock frequency of 5,2 GHz. By comparison, the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS has only 8 cores, with 16 threads and a clock frequency of 5,10 GHz. But, while Intel's 13th generation is built with 10-nanometer Raptor Lake architecture, AMD's Ryzen 7000 series is a Zen 4 chip with advanced 5-nanometer architecture.
"Now we're coming soon with the EliteBook G11, with Intel's new Ultra processors and AMD's 8000 series. Here, there is a lot of talk about them being so-called AI PCs, with their own Neural Processing Units – but the fact is that this is found in AMD's 7000 series already today," explains Forsdahl. "The 845 G10 models with Ryzen 7 processors feature Ryzen AI, the first NPU available on the market, so you can get an AI PC today."
So what should you do with an AI PC? Not all AI technology runs in the cloud. Much is designed to run on a dedicated, powerful GPU - but a regular office PC usually does not have one available, and then there is a high load on the CPU when you have to use Microsoft Copilot, or reduce noise, replace the background, color correct the image, and produce spontaneously translated text in a video conference. With a separate NPU chip, developed to run many simultaneous calculation operations (like a GPU), both CPU and GPU get help and relief from someone who can do it, and the experience of all the modern AI-driven functions becomes far better for the user.
"An important function on the EliteBook G10 is power management," says Forsdahl. “What I didn't mention last time is that the power system is AI-powered. Just like in an electric car, the battery does not benefit from being fully charged at all times. So, our AI battery system keeps track of how you use the machine, how often you charge, how long you leave it with the power cable plugged in and how much you're out and about using the battery. And then it charges accordingly, increasing both lifespan and perceived capacity. In addition, the AI is so smart that it tricks you a little, and writes that the battery is charged 100% even though it may actually only have 85%, so that you don't think you have to plug in the cable. But, it obviously requires some processing power and electricity to keep up with this. If you have an 845 model with AMD Ryzen AI, the dedicated NPU chip will make the process almost invisible, and you will experience even greater gains."
There are also a number of other AI-powered features and solutions in the HP EliteBook G10, which take advantage of the NPU in the Ryzen 7 processors.
In terms of interaction, the AI-driven processes are not only well-known noise reduction, but also automatic camera selection using two cameras, which activates what you see in it, as well as the Natural Tone and Appearance Filter, which analyzes the colors of you and your surroundings, and performs a color correction , so that you look your best in the meeting.
On the productivity front, HP boasts Intelligent Hibernate, which puts the machine into sleep mode based on your unique usage patterns, and Smart Sense, which monitors what is happening in the machine and makes automatic adjustments to energy-intensive tasks, so that the battery, fan, processor, and everything everything else is run in a balanced and appropriate manner.
"Intel is all well and good," says Forsdahl, "but if you haven't tried a laptop with an AMD processor, maybe it's time."
