The best for many

As is well known, HP's Intel-based EliteBooks come in a number of models, so that it is easy for everyone to find the PC that suits them. The cost-effective 600 series has more affordable screens in 16:9 format, while the top-spec 1000 series offers high resolution in 16:10, touch, and x360 functionality. And the 800 series? Yes, it lies nicely in the middle.

There are also several options here. The 860, for example, has a large 16-inch screen and numeric keypad, while the 830 is a small and light 13,3-inch, all in 16:10 format.

"I think the EliteBook 840 sells the most because it is a perfectly balanced product," says Forsdahl. "It's just the right size, just the right light, and just the right speed. Basically we should have done like Bentley; they are known for not giving the number of horsepower, but just writing 'enough'," he chuckles.

"In any case, the result is that the 840 is a PC suitable for the vast majority of business users, who want a machine they can easily take with them, which is quiet, solid, has a battery that lasts all day, and has enough power to to get the job done, either alone or connected to a screen and keyboard."

The advantages of EliteBook

Whichever EliteBook model you have in mind, there are three things that must be mentioned when talking about them: security, interaction and sustainability.

Security

"We like to say that we have the world's most secure PC portfolio," says Forsdahl. “It's because of the security chip we've built into the hardware – the HP Endpoint Security Controller. It keeps your PC safe and is the cornerstone of HP Wolf Security.”

The chip works together with Intel vPro, and among other things helps HP Sure Start prevent malware from hiding in the BIOS. It also allows HP Sure Run to prevent viruses from disabling software-based security solutions. "If a virus infection repeats the attempt many times, the device is isolated from the network, and a message is sent home to the IT department," explains Forsdahl.

"We have aimed to make the security solutions as seamless as possible," continues the product manager. "I think people appreciate being able to use their apps as usual, without experiencing reduced performance or requiring extra approvals and clicks."

Interaction

The new norm is to work hybrid, and then it is important to have a PC that takes care of both sound and image when you are in video meetings.

"We've probably all experienced noise when we're on a call," says Forsdahl. "That's why we've equipped our EliteBooks with AI-powered noise reduction, which removes everything but speech - both on what you send out and what you receive."

In addition, he is excited about the new 5-megapixel web camera that now comes as standard. "HP Auto Frame uses all the pixels in the camera to keep you in the center of the image even if you move around," explains Forsdahl. "We also have support for a second camera, which lets you show off things with picture-in-picture, or just vary the camera angle depending on where you're looking. Nice not to have people look in your ear when you also have a camera on your docking screen!”

Sustainability

It is also important to think about the materials the PCs are made of, and the EliteBook 840 G10 has an aluminum chassis.

"We make all our company models in magnesium or aluminium," says Forsdahl. "That's because it's much easier to recycle metal than plastic mixed with carbon fiber. While it can be almost impossible to get hold of recycled carbon fiber, our aluminum chassis contain between 50 and 75% recycled material – and with magnesium we're talking up to 90%.”

Where competing machines in carbon can be even thinner and lighter, the design is a conscious environmental choice on HP's part. "If you want to make portable PCs as thin as possible, you have to solder all the components," explains Forsdahl. "We believe that it is wrong to propose that you have to throw away the entire motherboard if a fault should occur. By placing memory, SSD, 4G/5G, wi-fi etc. on the socket, they can be easily replaced by a service person. In addition, it can be upgraded if you need more memory or a larger disk."

In addition, the batteries on HP's models last longer, and have the same warranty as the machine - preferably 3 years. "The secret is that we don't fully charge the batteries," reveals Forsdahl. "Even though it says the battery is fully charged, we may only have charged it somewhere between 70 and 95%, depending on how you use your PC." It also reduces the possibility of so-called Battery Swelling, and means that when the PC is disposed of in 3-5 years, it is still fully usable.

The right PC for the right user

People are different. Some are constantly on the move, and work exclusively from their laptop; others divide their time between well-equipped workplaces at home and in the office. Some need lots of power, others manage with something more cost-effective.

No matter what kind of needs you and your colleagues have for an HP PC, there's one to suit - but, let's guess, the odds are good that your choice will land on a HP EliteBook 840 G10.
