Vocabulary and technical terminologies are very interesting if you are on the "inside" of the industry that speaks to you. On the other hand, if you have stumbled across our website for the first time in your search for an IT supplier, then it can be difficult to understand what we mean when we write "Join us up in the cloud".

That's why we've put together a small list of the terms that are great to learn if you're going to greet your future IT department, buy in products or maybe you're just curious about our industry.

Let's greet the subjects together, we'll start with the most difficult ones (I think):

Naas: NaaS stands for "Network as a Service". "Network" translated is, after all, network. Networks have many names in this country, and the most well-known expression is probably Wifi in an ordinary household.

Everything that says "as a Service" are solutions we can deliver "as a service". Instead of buying a new PC, you pay a fixed sum per month and rent one from us (DaaS). The same principle applies to network equipment (NaaS). It can be scaled up and down with a few keystrokes. The services are easy to handle and will ensure you a very predictable invoice from us every month. The services are perfect for those who are growing and those who need flexibility from month to month.

DaaS: DaaS stands for Device as a Service. "Device" or unit as we also call it, is simply equipment that we supply. In short, this means that we deliver PCs to your company as a service, where you pay a fixed monthly price per user, with no commitment period. We offer several different PCs, desktops and laptops, and can also supply docking stations and monitors. When you no longer need the equipment, it is returned, and of course we ensure the safe and secure deletion of all data.

Saas: SaaS is the abbreviation for "Software as a Service". "Software" means software. SaaS services are very versatile, because there are countless software out there. The ones we deliver include Web TV, KursAdmin, PDS booking system, Managed Web (website) and Digital Voting.

Software: Directly translated it is, as I said, software. When we talk about software, it is often non-physical things that belong to the digital world. Whether it's a software you access through a browser or whether it's something you download onto your computer is the same.

Hardware: What is also called hardware are physical things you use in your everyday IT. So, your PC or laptop.

The cloud: The famous cloud is not a physical cloud, even if Grandma thinks so. We don't blame her. Many also tend to point upwards when talking about the cloud. So many of us probably have the feeling that the files are hovering over our heads. Fortunately, this is not the case. The cloud is just the great word that makes you remember it. The server is the physical thing that stores your data when it is in the "cloud". What is a server? Check below.

Server: A server is a physical box. Often gray or black and with lights flashing here and there. The server stores data. At least that's the main job. It is rare for ordinary people to have their own server in the house, but in companies it can often be a small server cluster or data centers in the basement. In our data center at Nærum farm, we have several thousand servers in production.

Public cloud: A public cloud doesn't mean your data is public. It just means that they are stored in a place where many others have their data stored as well. Private individuals often share servers with others, but all the data is stored safely for themselves. A public cloud is perfect for an ordinary person in the street, but also for companies that need rapid scale-up or scale-down. We use Microsoft Azure as a public cloud when we deliver to customers. Microsoft as a player is both serious and skilled at this. In addition, they have servers in Norway - for many this is important when choosing cloud storage.

Private Cloud: In both public and private clouds, your data is stored safely. The main difference is the server. With a private cloud, your data is stored on your own server. In our context, this means that you get your own servers with us. Private cloud is perfect for those who are very concerned about security, uptime and privacy.

Hybrid or multicloud environment: If you want the benefits of both public cloud and private cloud, we can easily set up a multicloud system for you. Multicloud is therefore a combination of services and software. We then set up an infrastructure that is easier to understand and handle. Such a system often incurs very predictable costs.

cloud services: Cloud services are essentially all services that can deliver data storage to you. All of the above fall under this term.

Infrastructure: Infrastructure means so much in various contexts, and in our case it simply does the setup of your services. The infrastructure should tell you what IT tools you have available, where they are located and how they work.

Digital Workplace: Digital workplace is an expression we use when we talk about tools that make your workplace accessible from anywhere. On the service page of our Digital Workplace, you will therefore find several different solutions for how you can work as best as possible from anywhere. This with access to your files while ensuring security.

Digital Security: This is an expression you have probably heard a lot. Digital security is keeping the information you have written, created or shared on digital surfaces safe. Your files, which you don't want everyone to see, will stay safe if you follow our data storage advice. Storing data online through reputable providers is usually safe, but there are many with malicious intent who want to get their hands on information. Therefore, it is extra important to follow the advice on e.g. password and two-factor authentication.

Data security: You can secure your data by selecting cloud services and servers that are adapted to your security needs. Please read about private and public cloud.

Cyber attacks and threats: Cyber is the word used to describe something that belongs to the digital world. Cyberattacks are digital attacks on things like your website or your internal software. Then there are people with evil intentions who want to get hold of your information or shut you down for a period of time. The goal is, as a rule, financially oriented. Either make you pay or make you lose money.

IT solutions: IT stands for "information technology", but we rarely say that. We believe that IT and IT solutions involve everything from software to physical equipment that you use in your job. A fairly open concept in other words.

Software Asset Management: This is the name of one of our services. Directly translated, the name is software management, but we think it sounds a lot cooler in English 🙂 This service involves us handling, managing and optimizing all the software you need. We help you with everything from agreement and security considerations to user adoption.

Digital signage: Here we have also used English. We know what digital means, and signage can be translated into signage in Norwegian. Our service is therefore digital signage on both a large and small scale. So if you want a wall filled with screens that can show off what you want - then we can help you!

We hope this article is nice to have in a meeting with us and the entire IT universe. Welcome you shall be!
