1. Backup is needed for several reasons and data loss is something that can happen to most people, including those who work in the cloud. If you discover that a document or email has been deleted shortly after the accident, you will most likely find it in the trash. It stays here for 30 days, and you can easily restore the document yourself. After another 30 days, the object is moved to "deleted objects", to which only the administrator has access. It stays here for 14-30 days before it is permanently deleted.

The same flow as described above also applies to documents in OneDrive / Sharepoint, with the only difference that it is then the cloud service's trash and the cloud service's "deleted objects". Here, too, the maximum limit is around 90 days, before the object is permanently deleted. The same goes for documents that have version control in Office 365.

Everyday people are moving into the cloud and into Office 365 services with their data. Many people then do not think about whether a good backup solution is included in the service. The standard deliveries allow you to retrieve deleted documents or older versions approximately 90 days back in time. Our Head of Service Development, Ulrik Nilsen-Nygaard, mentions three points that are absolutely essential if you do not have a dedicated backup solution today:

  1. How much data can your business lose?
  2. How long of a downtime breach can your company handle?
  3. How long should we keep data?

But it won't happen to me?
Many people think "it won't happen to me" when it comes to data loss. That's not true, but unfortunately you often don't realize it until the accident has happened and data has already been lost. Backup is more relevant now than it has ever been, because we all constantly surround ourselves with and work with more and more data. What matters for the backup solution you choose is how often your data changes and how critical the data is. The most common in dedicated solutions are daily or weekly backups.
