What's the deal with own systems?
It probably sounds very fancy with "own systems", and most people probably think that here the hundreds of pounds have flown away. Yes, building yourself costs money, but what many people forget is that things that DON'T work also cost money. Things like:

  • Clutter and fuss between the systems you use today
  • Hours with support that you will never get back
  • Frustrated employees

All this is expensive. Many people don't even know how expensive it is. Therefore, building your own system can be the right investment. This is something many people can relate to outside of work as well. Several of us want to build a house, an apartment or renovate a home during our lives. Why do we do it? Yes, because we want it to be "ours", and adapted to "our unique needs". It should work exactly as we want, be easy to move around in, user-friendly for the family and have walls exactly where we need them. Building your own IT system is somewhat the same thing.

The main difference between the system construction and the house construction is one thing: you.

Because even if you have full control over the house you want. So that doesn't always apply at work. You probably don't know what is needed to improve the IT system you use today. Or yes, you know which buttons or functions you miss, but since you are not the IT manager at work, you do not see all the solutions that we do. This is exactly where we come in. You are the expert in your organisation, we are experts in IT. Together we can be dynamite!

Own systems vs. standard packages from the cataland - what's the difference?
Standard packages or standard programs are just like the prefab houses you can pick out from the catalogues. Then there is little room to move walls, support beams, doors and windows. Even the fixture you dreamed of may have to be adjusted to keep it within the standard package. Flexibility and dynamic adaptation are therefore not always an important keyword here. What the standard can give you, on the other hand, is a system that requires little work before you can introduce it in the organisation. In addition, there are few decisions you have to make. The biggest advantage of the standard package is that the tool can be used from the same day.

Standard services are well suited to companies that operate with few tools today. You need a secure system for mail, data storage and a secure network like our service Digital Workplace and NaaS delivers. These are systems that are perfect for several different industries, be it law firms, energy companies or you who belong to the real estate industry.

Separate systems, on the other hand, are for companies that need a very high level of security, that handle large amounts of sensitive data and where a lot of data exchange typically takes place at the same time. Industries where this is common are e.g. the health sector, the transport industry and industries that handle food, pharmacy products and other socially critical functions. When we talk about socially critical services and functions, it goes without saying that security related to these plays a very special role. If you are unsure how the new The EU directive on IT security precisely affects your business - then maybe it's time for a conversation with your IT contact?

The benefit of building your own systems
What we see from those who choose to build their own systems is that efficiency increases, the programs are more user-friendly and security is higher. Putting the value of it in kroner and øre is not easy, but we know a lot about what it costs when the system fails. In December 2021, a large Norwegian food producer was attacked. That led to over two weeks of crisis management. When their annual report for 2021* came, we learned that it cost them NOK 36 million. This despite the fact that they had taken several preparatory measures to prevent attacks. It puts things into perspective!

So where do you start if you're wondering if you need a separate system? Then we are ready! Contact your nearest customer advisor or send us one mail. Then, through conversations and workshops, we can survey how the organization works today, where the shoe presses and what is needed to create efficiency, growth and increased user-friendliness. On top of it all, there must of course be a safety standard that is suitable in 2023. Along the way, our consultants build a system with exactly the composition you need. A system like this can send everything from logistics processes, supplier overviews, customer lists and the communication between the systems you have today in the right direction.

It is also important for us to clarify that our goal is always to: Simplify, improve and create a worry-free everyday IT life for you. Things just have to work. And not least, your people must understand what it is and how it should be used. We hope you became a little wiser on the topic!
