When the worst happens
For a municipality in the south-east of Norway, it could not have gotten worse when they experienced computer attacks on the night of 9 February this year. It had insane consequences. Among other things, during the first weeks of the attack, the attack was almost completely without e-mail. All PCs had to be formatted and rebooted before they could be used. In addition, there is a great danger that sensitive data has gone astray. What is the price tag on the attack? We are talking about at least NOK 10 million.
The mayor of the municipality admitted in February that security was not good enough, but then maybe Østre-Toten municipality does not seem like a clear target for computer attacks either? We understand well that the municipality did not think that a lift was so very necessary. Unfortunately, the targets for attacks have become both more and more arbitrary. Hackers can be bought, and such services are bought much more than before. PST itself mentions that Covid-19 has made even more people see the opportunity to sneak under the rug to companies, municipalities and much more while home office and wifi addiction is a fact.
